New Text Messaging Scam Seeks Information
February 2009
All BPCU members should remain alert for suspicious text messages.
These fraudulent communications -- in this case, a text message -- target specific consumers and ask them to call a fraudulent phone number to enter personal information because of a security block on their accounts.
One example reads as follows: "Dear Credit Union customer, we regret to inform you that we had to lock your bank account access."
The person in receipt of this text message is then directed to call a phone number, and asked to enter a credit card number, Personal Identification Number, and credit card expiration date.
Do not call the fraudulent phone number. If you called the fraudulent phone number and responded with any of the requested information, notify us immediately at 1-800-406-2642.
Remember, we will NEVER contact you by phone text message and ask for this kind of information.
It is important to note that no credit union systems have been compromised or hacked; you can only be victimized if you respond to this kind of scam.
